Episode 2: "Navigating Seoul: Subways, Buses, and Taxis"

 We’ll learn essential phrases and dialogues for using public transportation in Korea. We’ll focus on subways, buses, and taxis, which are the most common ways to get around!


[1: Key Vocabulary ]

  • 지하철 (jihacheol) – Subway
  • 버스 (beoseu) – Bus
  • 택시 (taeksi) – Taxi
  • 정류장 (jeongnyujang) – Bus stop
  • 노선도 (noseondo) – Route map
  • 요금 (yogeum) – Fare

[2: Useful Phrases]

At the Subway Station:

  • '이 노선이 어디로 가나요?' (I noseoni eodiro ganayo?) – Where does this line go?
  • '서울역으로 가는 열차는 어디에서 타요?' (Seoul-yeogeuro ganeun yeolchaneun eodieseo tayo?) – Where do I catch the train to Seoul Station?
  • '요금이 얼마인가요?' (Yogeumi eolma-ingayo?) – How much is the fare?

On the Bus:

  • '이 버스가 강남에 가나요?' (I beoseuga Gangnam-e ganayo?) – Does this bus go to Gangnam?
  • '다음 정류장에서 내려 주세요.' (Daeum jeongnyujangeseo naeryeo juseyo.) – Please let me off at the next stop.

In a Taxi:

  • '서울역으로 가 주세요.' (Seoul-yeogeuro ga juseyo.) – Please take me to Seoul Station.
  • '카드로 결제할 수 있나요?' (Kadeuro gyeoljehal su innayo?) – Can I pay by card?

[ 3: Practice Dialogue ]

Scenario 1: Asking for Directions at a Subway Station

Traveler: 서울역으로 가는 열차는 어디에서 타요?
(Seoul-yeogeuro ganeun yeolchaneun eodieseo tayo?) – Where do I catch the train to Seoul Station?

Station Staff:
1번 승강장에서 타시면 됩니다.
(Il-beon seunggyeongjangeseo tasyimyeon doemnida.) – You can board from platform 1.


Scenario 2: Talking to a Bus Driver
Traveler: 이 버스가 강남에 가나요?
(I beoseuga Gangnam-e ganayo?) – Does this bus go to Gangnam?

Bus Driver: 네, 갑니다.
(Ne, gamnida.) – Yes, it does.


Scenario 3: Riding a Taxi
Traveler: 인사동으로 가 주세요.
(Insadong-euro ga juseyo.) – Please take me to Insadong.

Driver: 네, 알겠습니다.
(Ne, algetseumnida.) – Sure, got it.
