TOPIK Mastery Ep2: Basic Korean Grammar for TOPIK I

Episode 2: Basic Korean Grammar for TOPIK I

[1: Sentence Structure ]

Korean follows a Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) order. This means the verb always comes at the end. Let's look at an example:

  • 저는 사과를 먹어요. (I eat an apple.)

    • 저 = I (subject)

    • 사과를 = apple (object)

    • 먹어요 = eat (verb)

Practice saying this with me: 저는 사과를 먹어요."

[2: Particles ]

Particles indicate the role of a word in a sentence. Here are a few important ones:

  1. 은/는 - Topic particle (저는 학생이에요. I am a student.)

  2. 이/가 - Subject particle (책이 있어요. There is a book.)

  3. 을/를 - Object particle (사과를 먹어요. I eat an apple.)

Remember, 은/는 gives general information, while 이/가 highlights the subject. Let’s practice using each of these."

[3: Present Tense Conjugation ]

In the present tense, verbs typically end in -아요 or -어요. Here’s how it works:

  • 먹다 (to eat) → 먹어요

  • 보다 (to see) → 봐요

Let’s practice: 저는 밥을 먹어요 (I eat rice.)

[4: Common Expressions ]

Here are some commonly used expressions that often appear in the TOPIK exam:

  • 감사합니다 (Thank you)

  • 죄송합니다 (I’m sorry)

  • 얼마예요? (How much is it?)

Try using these in daily conversations for better retention.
